da Vinci Surgery Q & A
What is robot-assisted da Vinci® surgery?
For gynecologic conditions requiring surgical treatment, traditional open surgery uses a large incision to access the uterus and other pelvic organs. Because your surgeon is required to cut through several layers of tissue to reach the pelvic organs, recovery is often rather long and painful as the muscles and other tissue knit back together.
The da Vinci Surgical System offers the traditional laparoscopic benefits of smaller incision size, decreased pain for the patient, and reduced recovery time compared to open surgery. Rather than the large incision used with open surgery, the da Vinci method requires tiny, 1-2 cm incisions. Dr. Gopal then inserts small, specialized surgical instruments through these openings to perform the procedure, including a tiny camera which gives him a high-definition, 3D view of your pelvic organs and structures.
As a surgeon, Dr. Gopal greatly appreciates the increased maneuverability, precision, and view the da Vinci offers compared to traditional laparoscopic systems. He often recommends the da Vinci system as an excellent alternative to traditional open, laparoscopic, and vaginal surgical approaches.
It’s important to note that while the da Vinci moves with robotic precision, Dr. Gopal is in complete control of the instruments at all times.
Are there other advantages to the da Vinci system?
Other benefits of the da Vinci system include:
- Less blood loss
- Lower complication rate
- Smaller scars
- Shorter hospital stay
Dr.Gopal often recommends the da Vinci system for:
- Sacrocolpopexy
- Hysterectomy
- Myomectomy
What is a sacrocolpopexy?
This surgical procedure is used to correct vaginal vault prolapse with mesh that helps hold the vagina in correct position. The dexterity and control provided by the da Vinci system offer the potential for improved access to the pelvic region compared to open and conventional laparoscopic approaches. It also provides more accurate graft placement which leads to stronger attachment and a successful outcome.
What is a myomectomy?
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths found in the uterus. If they become too large or numerous, fibroids can often interfere with the ability to conceive or carry a pregnancy full term and may cause pain and increased menstrual bleeding.
The traditional approach to myomectomy is open surgery through a large abdominal incision. The da Vinci myomectomy enables Dr. Gopal to perform this delicate operation with excellent precision and control with just a few small incisions.
What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. During the procedure, Dr. Gopal may also remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Almost 500,000 women in the United States undergo a hysterectomy each year, making it the second most common surgical procedure for women.
Reasons women may need a hysterectomy include:
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Heavy bleeding
- Cancer
Surgeons having a number of approaches to performing hysterectomies, including open, vaginal, and laparoscopic techniques. To reduce recovery time and get you back on your feet faster, Dr. Gopal uses the da Vinci Surgical System.
